Nedlo, The Gypsy Violinist, started his own show in 1949 and made a very considerable success of it. Ray's a Laugh did not actually include Nedlo's name among the credits, nor indeed that of Charlie Olden (his real name). Nedlo/Olden was, by 1949, calling himself Ted Ray - and that was how he billed himself for his new radio series. Ray's a Laugh was, in the main, a domestic comedy. Ray's wife was played by Australian, Kitty Bluett. Fred Yule played his brother-in-law. Patricia Hayes also appeared as did Kenneth Connor as Sidney Mincing. In later series Ted had left the Cannon Enquiry Agency and joined The Daily Bugle as a reporter. Jack Watson and Charles Leno joined the cast and new characters included Mrs Dipper and Roger Curfew the paying guest with songs by John Hanson and the King's Men. Another early member of the cast was Peter Sellers, then only twenty-three and billing himself as 'an impressionist', who appeared as Soppy, a small boy who got ticked off by the nation's watchdogs for his catchphrase, 'Just like your big red conk!' and also as a strange lady called Crystal Jollibottom (Patricia Hayes) ('Stop it you saucebox!' she would cry in a crazy soprano). Amazing new Info on this film..! FYI: A Trip Down Market Street was filmed in 1906!! 4 Days Before The Quake. Dir...Miles Brothers. This film, was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing, to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he knows who owned them and when the plates were issued).. It was filmed only four days before the quake and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing but true! Copied from..www.archive.org. A trip down Market Street. The original version of which can be downloaded at....www.archive.org...suffered badly from "Film Roll" at the beginning and end, this version however has had those faults corrected and shows alot more detail particularly at the end were the film froze and skipped frames. This video is a slide show of the city of Fiume Italy from 1905-1945. Today the city is named Rijeka situated in the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. Gauhar Jaan (1873 -1930) was an Indian singer and dancer from Calcutta. She was one of the first performers to record music on 78 rpm records in India. Gauhar Jaan was born as Angelina Yeoward in 1873 in Patna, to William Robert Yeoward, an Armenian Jew working as an engineer in dry ice factory at Azamgarh, near Banaras, who married a Jewish Armenian lady, Allen Victoria Hemming around 1870. Victoria was born and brought up in India, and trained in music and dance. Within a few years in 1879, the marriage ended, causing hardships to both mother and daughter, who later migrated to Banaras in 1881, with a Muslim nobleman, 'Khursheed', who appreciated Victoria's music more than her husband. Later, Victoria, converted to Islam and changed Angelina's name to 'Gauhar Jaan' and hers to 'Malka Jaan' A major milestone in the history of Indian music occurred in 1902. It was in this year that Gauhar Jan was asked by the "Gramophone Company" to record a series of songs for them. This corpus of recordings became a cornerstone for their business for many years. She was paid 3000 rupees per recording, which was considered a lot of money in those days. As it turned out, the historical value of these recordings would be priceless. This "Ragtime Waltz." is my favorite Joplin piece! ...this was also my first YouTube video, and I made a few mistakes due to nervousness! I played and learned this piece in less than a year after a 27 year layoff from piano (I had 4 years of childhood lessons). This is a 1905 Reid 15 hp engine that my Dad just rebuilt/restored. The cart it sits on, He built himself from pictures. The rear wheels are made from 30" pipe, and the fronts are 16". The frame is some left over I beam and the steering is his own design. The fuel is propane with a needle valve to regulate flow. The ignition is some old military coil with a sparkplug screwed into an adapter in the head that he made and a micro switch mounted on the base with a trigger mounted to a disc bolted to the crank. The flyball gov. isn't connected yet, but it will be soon to help control rpm.

Here is a running Best Steam Tractor that was built in 1905. It weighs 19 tons and is powered by a two cylinder 110hp steam engine having a 9" bore and 9" stroke. The tractor belongs to the Oakland Museum and had been running for years at the Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont, California. I recently heard that it is moving to somewhere near Willits, California. The video finishes up with some model steam engines running in Tilden Regional Park just east of Berkeley, CA
