Monterey

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Monterey in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located two hours south of San Francisco and 5 1 hours north of LA, Monterey retains the charm of a small town while boasting some of the best dining, shops and attractions on the Central Coast. Cannery Row, immortalized in the 1945 John Steinbeck novel, is one of Monterey's top attractions. Today, Cannery Row's sardine factories are now home to quirky shops, chain restaurants and posh hotels. Monterey Bay Aquarium, housed in historic Hoven Cannery, is a must-see attraction. A downstairs exhibit displays Steinbeck memorabilia and vintage sardine machinery. For a fun day out with the kids, check out Old Fisherman's Wharf, originally built in 1846. It's a typical bustling pier, with million-dollar Monterey boats, fresh seafood, candy shops and amusements. We stopped for lunch at Old Fisherman's Grotto, known for its fresh cracked crab and the best clam chowder in Monterey. I have to say, it lived up to its reputation. For a great locals-style breakfast, pop in to Old Monterey Cafe on Alvarado Street. Next, rent a surrey from Bay Bikes and explore Monterey State Historic Park, just a few blocks up the street. You'll find some of the best preserved adobes in California here, including Custom House, built by Mexico in 1827 for sea trading, and California's First Theatre, built in 1846 as entertainment for local sailors. The Who - My Generation - Monterey Pop Festival - Total Destruction

1967, At Monterey Pop Festival, My Generation by The Who. Good video, it becomes insane at the end. Everything is getting destryoed. Guitars smashing, amps being hit. Drums being kicked. Destructive, and awesome. The Who are one band that can really impress their viewers.

The Who - Substitute (live Monterey 1967)

The Who are an English rock band formed in 1964 by Roger Daltrey (vocals), Pete Townshend (guitar), John Entwistle (bass) and Keith Moon (drums). They became known for energetic live performances which often included instrument destruction. The Who have sold about 100 million records and have charted 27 top forty singles in the United Kingdom and United States with 17 top ten albums, with 18 Gold, 12 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone. Moon died at the age of 32 in 1978, after which the band released two studio albums, the UK and US top five Face Dances (1981) and the US top ten It's Hard (1982), with drummer Kenney Jones, before disbanding in 1983. The Who are one of the most influential rock groups of the 1960s and '70s, influencing artists from Led Zeppelin to The Clash. Bono of U2 said, "More than any other band, The Who are our role models." Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder said, "The one thing that disgusts me about The Who is the way they smashed through every door in the uncharted hallway of rock 'n' roll without leaving much more than some debris for the rest of us to lay claim to." The Who's Mod genesis inspired Mod revival bands such as The Jam, as well as later bands of the Britpop wave in the mid-1990s, such as Blur and Ash. The band has also been called "The Godfathers of Punk" due to their loud, aggressive approach to rock and the attitude evinced in songs like "My Generation". Monterey Bay Aquarium

Explore the Monterey Bay Aquarium with me! In this video, you'll see everything from sea otters to sting rays and from sardines to sharks. At the time I shot this video, the Monterey Bay Aquarium had the only Great White shark in captivity. It was accidentally caught in commercial fishing gear and they nursed it back to health. It has since been released into the wild, and it is doing well. The aquarium has saved five different sharks in the past five years. Click the link below to learn more about the Aquarium's research on Great White Sharks. www.montereybayaquarium.org Don't forget to Rate, Comment, and Subscribe!! Thanks for watching!

Moby Grape - Monterey Pop Festival (1967) ''Indifference", "Sitting by the Window" & "Omaha"

One of the best '60s San Francisco bands, Moby Grape were also one of the most versatile. Although they are most often identified with the psychedelic scene, their specialty was combining all sorts of roots music -- folk, blues, country, and classic rock & roll -- with some Summer of Love vibes and multi-layered, triple-guitar arrangements.

Paul Desmond plays "Emily" - Monterey Jazz festival 1975

Paul Desmond - November 25, 1924 - 1977. Alto Saxophonist. Born Paul Emil Breitenfeld. Musical genius. Composer of the jazz classic "Take Five". The song is the waltz "Emily" by Johnny Mandell (from the film "The Americanisation of Emily) performed at the Monterey Jazz festival in 1975. He played a Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto, a Gregory 4a-18m mouthpiece, and Rico 3-1/2 reeds and is seen here wearing "the suit". He stays fairly close to the lovely melody for the first 32 bars, and then off he goes. The effortlessness with which he spins beautiful melodic improvised lines is depressing (How did he do that?!!). This was the result of genius. He had total command of his instrument, having the ability to play far in to the altissimo register long before it became a studied discipline for the saxophone. And he just stands there, moving little more than his long fingers. No jumping, dancing, swaying, or crouching, just beautiful, swinging music. Note that he is quoting the waltz "Would You" at 2:35. He appears pleased with the result at 2:43. This is what brilliance sounds like.

Frank Sinatra "It Happened in Monterey"

This is Sinatra at his very best, the peak, the top of his game. "It Happened in Monterey" is from the album, Songs for Swingin' Lovers released by Capitol in 1956. The wonderful arrangements and orchestrations are by Nelson Riddle, who along with Billy May, created the best recordings of Sinatra's career during his Capitol years, 1953-1961. The album is available on CD on Capitol.
