The race was on the Grand Prix circuit and was interrupted by a couple of safety car sessions when a Dodge Viper hit the wall coming out of Surtees and a Lamorghini met a similar fate later in the same place. The Porsche Racing Club schedules several mixed-class Porsche races throughout the west. One such class is the Spec911 class for 911 cars up to 1989. Minimum weight with driver is 2350 lbs and horsepower is aprox 250Hp. Tires are Toyo RA-1 225/50-16 and 245/45-16 on 7" and 8" wheels. This is a 10 minute chronicle of my brother's first time driving his new Porsche race car at the legendary Sebring road course in FL. The car currently is configured with an air cooled 3.4 liter normally aspirated Porsche 911 engine with individual throttle bodies for each cylinder. Hope to change to a water cooled 996 twin turbo engine sometime in the near future . . . but for now the relatively low horsepower air cooled engine is allowing to attempt to learn how to drive the 911 platform.

Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the 917/30 variant was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.3 seconds, 0--124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of over 240 mph (390 km/h)[citation needed]. There are 6 variants of the 917. The least-powerful version is the 917K (the most successful), which produces around 620 bhp. There is also a long-tail version (917LH), a "pig" version, modified 917K with the 908 rear spoilers and the 917/30. In the 1973 Can-Am series, the turbocharged version Porsche 917/30 developed over 1100 bhp (820 kW), and as much as 1580 bhp (1180 kW) in qualifying tune. The 917 is one of the most iconic sports racing cars of all time, largely for its high speeds and high power outputs, and was made into a movie star by Steve McQueen in his 1971 film Le Mans. 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the 917, and Porsche held a special birthday celebration at the Goodwood Festival of Speed On 9 August 1975, Porsche and Penske would give the Can-Am car its final send off in style, when they took their 917/30 to Talladega to break the FIA speed record on a closed circuit.
