Gioachino Rossini - Tancredi - "Di tanti palpiti" (Ewa Podles, Vesselina Kasarova & Jennifer Larmore)

Not one compilation of Rossini's musical output would be complete without his first "hit tune": "Di tanti palpiti", the moderato section (a cabaletta of sorts) from the cavatina of Tancredi. In his biography of the Maestro, Stendhal wrote that the aria of Tancredi, known throughout Europe, was the most popular opera aria of its time... And also refered to as the "rice aria" because Rossini is supposed to have composed it while waiting for his risotto to cook one day in Venice (imagine: a hungry composer composing such a little masterpiece out of boredom :) )! The cavatina deals with Tancredi's return from exile Tancredi to defend his homeland against the Saracene besiegers (and to see Amenaide, of course). Although many recordings of the aria usually give us only the moderato, Tancredi's cavatina is actually a whole scene: an interlude (depicting Tancredi's boat dropping anchor in a port) - an impassioned recitative - a short (and rather boring) aria - a "cabaletta". It's also interesting to point out that the aria is quite "unrossinian" in character, it almost seems to come from another musical period: the moderato section could be attributed to any composer from the end of the 18th century. I decided to post only the "Di tanti palpiti" section for a number of reasons, chief amongst them being the fact that it is really the best part of Tancredi's cavatina. It's almost a suprise when it appears after the rather uninspired cantabile. I once had about ten versions of this ...

For my good friend Doug, I have made this tribute to his favourite onscreen pair, the dreamily handsome Alain Delon and the outrageously beautiful Claudia Cardinale. Possibly the screen's most gorgeous couple, they star as Angelica & Tancredi in the Italian masterpiece, Il Gattopardo ( The Leopard) directed by Luchino Visconti. The film is an all-time classic, and this couple are an essential element in the film, for both are very much in love with one another. The music is none other the "The Love Theme from The Godfather" composed by Nino Rota. I chose it because the song is for Michael & Apollonia's love in Sicily, and seeinf as The Leopard is set in Sicily, I thought nothing would go better with this stunning pair.

Claudio Monteverdi - Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (1/2)

Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, dramatic cantata (from Book 8), SV 153 (ca.1638) Les Arts Florissants William Christie Stage works with music, such as mysteries, moralities, sacred dramas, and masques, have a long history. Combattimento -- partly ballet and partly acting -- was, however, a novel concept for its time. It was composed for a private entertainment at the Palazzo Giralmo Moncenigo in 1624 on the occasion of an aristocratic wedding, and performed by musicians from St. Mark's, where Monteverdi was maestro di cappella. The work was not published until 1638. Described by Monteverdi as a dramatic cantata, it is set to a classical text by Tasso (verses 52-68 of Canto XII of Jerusalem Delivered). In his introduction to the score he states that all details of both action and words should be strictly observed by the singers, actors, and instrumentalists. (ie, not dictated solely by the music). The narrator (testo) who describes and comments on the events portrayed remains detached from the action, and is instructed to sing clearly and articulate correctly. Sound recordings of Combattimento are bound to be less than satisfactory by omitting, as they must, the visual aspects of the work. The orchestra is small: a quartet of strings, contrabass, and harpsichord. Tancredi, a Christian knight, has fallen in love with Clorinda, a Saracen warrior. She has attacked and burned a Christian fort and, not recognizing her in armor, Tancredi pursues her as she returns from the ...

Tancredi Pasero - Don Carlo - Ella giammai m'amo - Parlophone E 11367 enregistré ca 1937-1939

Tancredi Pasero (January 11, 1893, Turin - February 17, 1983, Milan) was an Italian bass. Particularly associated with the Italian repertory, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career largely based in his native country. After studying with the baritone Arturo Pessina in Turin, Pasero made his debut there, in 1917, as Ramphis in Aida, although he always considered his official operatic debut to have taken place in Vicenza, on December 15, 1918, as Rodolfo in La sonnambula. Pasero went on to make guest appearances in London, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Brussels and Buenos Aires. Although La Scala, Milan, where he made his debut in 1926, would become his main artistic home, New York did get to hear him from 1929 until 1933, when he sang at the Metropolitan Opera. His roles at the Met included Oroveso, Raimondo, Miller, Ferrando, Fiesco, Padre Guardiano and Alvise. He notably sang the role The Miller in the world premiere of Umberto Giordano's Il re on the 12 January 1929 at La Scala. He also enjoyed considerable success in such Wagner roles (sung in Italian) as Heinrich, Marke, Pogner, Hagen, Gurnemanz. He appeared, too, as Mussorgsky 's Boris and participated in the first performances of several operas, notably, Mascagni 's Nerone, in Milan, and Pizzetti 's Orseolo, in Florence. Pasero retired from the stage in 1950. He was widely regarded as having one of the finest bass voices of his era, ranking with those of Alexander Kipnis, Mark Reizen and Ezio Pinza ...

Colin Lee staring in Tancredi - Video 1 - Vienna October 2009

Tancredi, the Sicilian drama of war and love that abounds with melodies and is based on Voltaires 1760 French tragedy of the same name, was commissioned for the Venetian carnival season of 1812/13. For the 21-year-old Gioachino Rossini, who was at the beginning of his career, the work represented a particularly great challenge. The only way he could make his name as an operatic composer was to produce a successful opera seria. To suit the taste of Italian audiences of the time the librettist Gaetano Rossi replaced the tragic ending of Voltaires drama with a happy one. After years of bloody feuding, the opposing families of the Argirios and the Orbazzanos form an alliance to fight the Saracens who are laying siege to the city. To cement their new alliance, Argirio promises Orbazzano the hand of his daughter Amenaide in marriage. But Amenaide is in love with Tancredi, who was dispossessed and banished during the civil war. For his part, Tancredi does not yet know anything about the planned marriage of Amenaide to Orbazzano. In desperation, Amenaide tries to send a message to Tancredi asking him to rid the country of Orbazzano. But the letter goes astray and finds its way to Orbazzano. However, he thinks the letter is intended for the Saracen leader Solamir. Amenaide is arrested and sentenced to death. Tancredi, believing that he has been betrayed by Amenaide, appears incognito, kills Orbazzano and later defeats the Saracens as well at the head of the army. The populace ...

Gioachino Rossini - Tancredi (1813) - Finaletto for Amenaide, Tancredi & Argirio - "Amori, scendete"

This upload connects two lighter pieces from one of Rossini's first successful serious operas, "Tancredi", that were actually the first two numbers that I fell in love with when I began listening to the opera and that I haven't heard in a while, so I decided to upload them, as I still find myself falling for the sheer charm of the pieces. The coretto actually precedes the Act One finale and celebrates the arranged marriage between Amenaide and Orbazzano in a simple ABA structure, contrasting the lyrical A section with the militant B section. A very slight choral scene, not one of Rossini best but one with a great deal of charm. In this case, it opens the finaletto from the Venice version of the opera which ends with the final reconciliation of the lovers, bringing the opera to the traditional happy ending, in contrast to the more revolutionary final number of the original, and it seems quite a fitting place for it. The finaletto itself is a simple succession of ariosos for both of the lovers and Amenaide's father and a final terzettino for all three but a very attractive one at that, and it doesn't come as a surprise that Alberto Zedda preferred to end his version of the score with the finaletto, rather than the more realistic but musically ordinary dramatic final cavatina. It also helps that a superlative cast is assembled in the present recording, putting to shame all other versions of the score. Gioachino Rossini - Tancredi - "L'aura che intorno spiri" (Sumi Jo & Ewa Podles)

The series of musical excepts from Giachino Rossini's operas, entitled "Master of Belcanto", continues with new uploads and a whole new concept. I decided to do something a bit different for my new upload: a compilation based on a single theme which is featured prominently in all selections. The first theme is love (what else :)?). The compilation is entitled: "Tornami a dir che m'ami". Originally, I had planned a more diverse program which would have included arias as well as duets. But when I saw the size of the content I wanted to upload (the remaining compilation is about two hours long), I decided to do love arias as a separate series. The chosen items include love scenes from the very first to the very last operas by Rossini. We start at "L'occasione fa il ladro" with a simple pastoral duet and finish at the beginning of the second act of "Guillaume Tell" with a romantic grand scena. Such an approach gives us a chance to understand how Rossini's composing style changed with each passing year. The presented excepts are listed below with some notes detailing their characteristics. As the whole compilation is quite large, I'm going to upload everything slowly. 1) «Se non m'inganna il core» for Alberto and Berenice from «L'occasione fa il ladro». www.youtube.com 2) «Quanto e dolce a un'alma amante» for Florville and Sofia from "Il Signor Bruschino". www.youtube.com 3) "L'aura che intorno spiri" for Amenaide and Tancredi from "Tancredi". www.youtube.com Here we have an ...

Gioachino Rossini - Tancredi - "Fiero incontro" (Ewa Podles & Sumi Jo)

As my pseudonym has already given away, I'm an admirer of Rossini's music, in particular :). And yet, I realized today that I don't have that much Rossini's music on my channel. I'm going to change that :). I'm going to start uploading my favorite pieces from the operas of the maestro not only as single uploads, but also as compilations and small comparisons (such as the present one). Thankfully, I have most of Rossini's operas and cantatas :)! So, here is the first of a series of uploads entitled "The Master of Belcanto". "Tancredi" was the young composer's first real "hit" and it's easy to understand why. Of course, "Di tanti palpiti" is the opera's best known tune, but it's only the tip of the iceberg: a couple of good arias for the father, two meltingly beautiful duets for the lovers, a prison scene for Amenaide which is wonderfully expressive and a good final aria before the finale for the hero. What more could anyone want? Granted, this still isn't, in my opinion, Rossini's best work as good as it is: a couple of uninspired arias for second characters, absence of a real villain, a rather flat finale to the First Act... But such sceptisism only underlines the fact how the highlights of the opera are beyond critisism. I decided to first upload the Second Act Duet of the lovers. The situation is tipical of a Romantic opera. Tancredi believes himself betrayed by Amenaide and, naturally, ignores her pleas. The duet is built around the standart Rossini model: a moderato ...
