Metta - Loving Kindness To wish happiness for all beings of all realms and happiness for yourself as well. one of the 4 mental states one should practice. Metta Sutta This is what should be done By one who is skilled in goodness, And who knows the path of peace: Let them be able and upright, Straightforward and gentle in speech. Humble and not conceited, Contented and easily satisfied. Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways. Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful, Not proud and demanding in nature. Let them not do the slightest thing That the wise would later reprove. Wishing: In gladness and in saftey, May all beings be at ease. THE DISCOURSE ON LOVING-KINDNESS _________________________________________ www.aimwell.org ________________________________________ Metta Sutta ----------- Some 500 monks who went into the jungle to practice meditation were disturbed and frightened by animals and social people, whereupon they returned and reported the matter to the Buddha. The Buddha then advised the monks to go back to the same place but armed with the sword of Metta (Loving-kindness) for their protection. The Buddha then delivered this Sutta to teach them how to practice this loving-kindness. The monks returned to the jungle and radiated their loving-kindness to animals and social people and thereafter they continued with their meditation without any hindrance. These same animals and social sprits who had earlier created disturbances, later repented and paid their respects to the monks. This is, therefore, an important Sutta for the devotees to recite to radiate their loving-kindness to every living being. By doing so they can overcome any disturbances, find peace and happiness for themselves and help others to live peacefully by practicing this great virtue. 'Karaniya Metta Sutta which is often referred simply as the Metta Sutta is the Buddhist discourse found in the Sutta Nipata and Khuddakapatha. Ten verses in length, the Metta Sutta extols both the virtuous qualities and the meditative development of metta (Pali), traditionally translated as loving-kindness or friendliness. This discourse is found in the Samyuttanikāya, Mahāvagga, Saccasamyutta — the Great Chapter of the Book of Kindred Sayings, in the collection of sayings on the Truths. It is also found in the narrative of the Vinaya Mahāvagga, Pañcavaggiyakathā — the Great Chapter of the Vinaya Pitaka in the story of the group of five ascetics who attended on the bodhisatta for six years during his practice of asceticism. _______________________________________ The full title is the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, but it is widely known as the Dhammacakka Sutta. After attaining Enlightenment the Buddha was at first reluctant to teach the Dhamma that he had realised. He considered, "This Dhamma is profound and goes against the flow of sensual desire; most people are strongly attached to and immersed in sensual pleasures." However, he reasoned that some were not too strongly attached, and were already searching for truth. They would be able to understand it. First he thought to teach it to Ālāra Kālāma, who had taught him meditation to attain the realm of infinite consciousness, but devas told him that Ālāra had passed away only last week; and he realised this was true by his own direct knowledge. Next he thought about teaching Uddaka Rāmaputta, who had taught him meditation to attain the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, but devas told him that Uddaka had passed away the previous night; and he realised this was true by his own direct knowledge. 寶石經Ratana Sutta The city of Vesali was afflicted by a famine, causing death, especially to the poor folk. Due to the presence of decaying corpses the evil spirits began to haunt the city; this was followed by a pestilence. Plagued by these three fears of famine, non-human beings and pestilence, the citizens sought the help of the Buddha who was then living at Rajagaha. Followed by a large number of monks including the Venerable Ananda, his attendant disciple, the Buddha came to the city of Vesali. With the arrival of the Master, there were torrential rains which swept away the putrefying corpses. The atmosphere became purified, the city was clean. Thereupon the Buddha delivered this Jewel Discourse (Ratana sutta) (2) to the Venerable Ananda, and gave him instructions as to how he should tour the city with the Licchavi citizens reciting the discourse as a mark of protection to the people of Vesali. The Venerable Ananda followed the instructions, and sprinkled the sanctified water from the Buddha's own alms bowl. As a consequence the evil spirits were exorcised, the pestilence subsided. Thereafter the Venerable Ananda returned with the citizens of Vesali to the Public hall where the Buddha and his disciples had assembled awaiting his arrival. There the Buddha recited the same Jewel Discourse to the gathering:
